For a fairly young course, Northop has achieved maturity and reputation very rapidly. In its first season it hosted the 1994 Welsh PGA National Championship and it is to the great credit of Northop that it provided such a high standard contest.
Designed by John Jacobs, the highly respected golf teacher who finished runner-up to Henry Cotton in the Penfold tournament at nearby Llandudno 40 years earlier, the course makes the most of 272 acres of rich parkland and not only was it booked to stage the Welsh professional event again in 1995 and 1996, it was named as the venue for the Welsh Ladies Championship. Backed by excellent clubhouse facilities, golf at Northop is under the personal direction of one of Wales¦rsquo; best known professionals - David Llewellyn who partnered Ian Woosnam to victory for Wales in the 1987 World Cup.
David plays the course regularly and his favourite holes are the eighth, a downhill par five and the 16th, a 380 yard dog-legged par four with water to the right, trees to the left and a stream in front of the green, which will challenge all-comers.
